Neuromuscular Medicine Fellowship

Massachusetts General Hospital, Brigham and Women's Hospital, and Harvard Medical School

The Neuromuscular Medicine Fellowship is a one-year ACGME-accredited training program in electromyography (EMG) and neuromuscular medicine. Fellows in the Neuromuscular Medicine program receive training in the diagnosis and management of a variety of neuromuscular disorders in adults and children. Intensive training in electrodiagnostic testing and nerve/muscle biopsy are offered. Fellows also gain experience performing nerve ultrasound and single fiber EMG. The Neuromuscular Medicine Fellowship is a joint program of the Massachusetts General and Brigham and Women's Hospitals, with the BWH rotation including training at Children's Hospital Boston. Upon completion of this fellowship, trainees are eligible to sit for the Neuromuscular Medicine Subspecialty Boards under the auspices of the ABPN, and the Electrodiagnostic Medicine Boards (ABEM).

The 6 neuromuscular medicine fellows divide into two cohorts and rotate in three-month blocks between MGH and BWH/CH. The curriculum includes several regularly scheduled teaching conferences, including a year-long faculty-run lecture series that provides weekly lectures on EMG and neuromuscular medicine, a weekly nerve/ muscle biopsy conference, and a weekly EMG waveform conference at MGH.

Fellows rotate through the neuromuscular clinics and EMG laboratories in several participating institutions, including the Massachusetts General Hospital, Brigham and Women's Hospital, and Children's Hospital. In depth exposure to the diagnosis and management of inherited and acquired neuropathies and myopathies, myasthenia gravis, and motor neuron diseases is gained.

Fellows are expected to complete at least one academic project during the fellowship year, under the mentorship of a faculty member in the division of Neuromuscular Medicine. Each year, we accept fellows with diverse academic interests in career paths and their chosen projects reflect this breadth of interests.

Many of our graduates have gone on to have successful careers as physician scientists or clinical researchers. Others enter academic medicine or practice as clinical experts. Others have chosen to participate in or lead clinical trials, lead quality improvement work, or are passionate about medical education.
